How Liberating is Religious Education? The Case of Religious Education vs. Values Formation

Abstract:

Religious education has the dubious distinction of being a priori associated with the concept of "indoctrination" (Chazan 1983). This has been the case for religious education in the Philippines for so long. One cannot deny the fact that in most cases, students who had been taught religion in school more often than not remember only the cerebral, memorized facts of religion. Doctrine is often memorized and tests usually only try to determine what subject content was retained.
