Abstract:

It is not infrequent that the Filipino audience is harangued by impassioned orators, foreign and local, some of them allegedly ponderously learned and erudite, on the great benefits that Spain and the United States have showered on the Filipino people. In the course of their effort to impress the Filipinos with the greatness of their cultural contributions, they often make the sweeping statement that the Filipinos should be deeply grateful for the boons of religion, civilization and democracy which were brought to them by Spain and the United States.
