The Puppet Republic

Maximo M. Kalaw

Discipline: History, Philippine History

Abstract:

Japanese and Filipinos are both Asiatic peoples; but there are Asiatics and Asiatics. For one thing the Japanese claim they belong to the so-called Yamato race; we Filipinos do not. We are primarily Malays. And Malays have characteristics different from other Asiatics. Again different histories and different environments have brought about dissimilar characteristics. It is these differences which made the gap between the two people wide, very wide, added to the incidents connected with our invasion and conquest, of which I have spoken on other pages. Such a gap could not be bridged by two or three years of propaganda, no matter how clever.
