Abstract:

This paper is part of a continuing research that should lead to a book-length study on the balangay boat as the nexus of the maritime trading constellation in Southeast Asia and southern China, the cultural cross-fertilization of the region, and a complex historical view of the gradual demise of the balangay boat with the onset of colonization.
