Abstract:

The study determined the factors structure reasons of use of Obu-Manuvu dialect among the Indigenous youth in Marilog District, Davao City. A survey questionnaire elicited the responds of respondents. Data were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentage and weighted mean. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used. Results showed that majority of the respondents are female, ages 16-20 years old and in their high school level. The respondents strongly agree that they are using their dialect for their cultural integrity, pride, utility and survival. In oral form, they always use their dialect with their co-tribe; oftentimes use it in their school; never use it in their church; sometimes use it in their home and seldom use it in their community. They sometimes use it as a form of endearment when they are texting. There are two significant factors that underlie the structure of reasons of using Obo-Manuvu dialect: preservation of cultural integrity and survival of identity.
