THE COMPARISON OF BODY MASS INDEX OF ADOLESCENTS IN SELECTED PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN CALAMBA

Abstract:

The focus of this study was to compare the Body Mass Index of adolescents in selected public and private schools in Calamba, Laguna. The study has the following objectives: first, to know the food-eating habits of the respondents using the 24-hour food recall in terms of: (a.) consumption of food items; (b.) fruits; (c.) vegetables; and, (d.) beverages with sugar; second, to determine the Body Mass Indices of adolescents in selected public and private schools in Calamba; third, to determine if there is a significant difference in the Body Mass Index of adolescents between the two public schools (Looc National High School and E. Barreto Sr. National High School); fourth, to determine if there is a significant difference in the Body Mass Index of adolescents between the two private schools (Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba and Asian Computer College); and, fifth, to determine if there is a significant difference in the Body Mass Index of adolescents between the public and private schools in Calamba. Results showed that the foods eaten by the respondents varied from rice, pork, and fish. In terms of their BMI, most of the respondents have normal BMI, no adolescents from the public schools are obese while only one adolescent from the private schools is found out obese who is from Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba. In addition, the Body Mass Index has no significant difference between the two public schools, same with the two private schools. However, a significant difference has been obtained when the BMI of the respondents between public and private schools are compared. Awareness on proper eating, effective implementation of lecture about nutrition, proper food choices were few of the recommendations suggested in this study.
