Abstract:

This study sought to assess the practicability of electronic portfolio assessment as a substitute to traditional tests. Specifically, it identified the problems encountered by the students in the electronic portfolio development; it described the attitude of the students toward electronic portfolio assessment as a substitute to traditional tests; and it described the frequency of choosing such assessment as basis for the grade of the students in the entire subject and in the selected key result areas. After the development and assessment of the electronic portfolio of the 133 freshman education students, it was found out that the three primary problems encountered by the students were the insufficiency of time, need for technical support and availability of computer laboratory. Further, the students showed positive attitude to this kind of assessment. They claimed that electronic portfolio assessment could be given to them often as a substitute to traditional tests in the following key result areas: quizzes, laboratory exercises and projects, but sometimes only in major exams. It is recommended therefore that teachers should consider sufficiency of time, computer availability and technical skills of the students when using the electronic portfolio assessment as a substitute to traditional tests. Further, school administrators must continue supporting the call for sustained integration of ICT in assessment and other educational activities. Similar research must be conducted examining the teacher attitudes and perceptions in the electronic portfolio classroom and the effects on learning outcomes of the students.
