The Problematic Quality of Contemporary Art

Eduardo T. Deveza

Discipline: Notes and Scribblings

Abstract:

Contemporary art has made many a beholder guessing as to its matter and form - or as some, without any background on art appreciation, would ask: "Does it have any inner meaning, a hidden symbolism?" It is best to remember that art is a creation of man and thus it is not static. Its insistence to explore new reality is often affected by the convention of the period as far as the artist's style is concerned. Thus art is defined as a human activity which explores and hereby creates a new reality in a supra-rational manner and presents it symbolically or metaphorically as a microcosmic whole.
