Sensitivity of some leguminous green manure species to photoperiod is a major constraint to increased biomass and seed production. We studied the influence of time of sowing on biomass production and seed production of three green manure crops, Crotalaria juncea (sunn hemp), Phaseolus trilobus (Pillipesara), and Stizolobium deeringianum (velvet bean).

Pillipesara and sunn hemp are popular green manure crops in India suited for both upland and lowland conditions. Velvet bean is a fodder legume well adapted to areas of low rainfall and poor soil fertility.
