Abstract:

Urine samples from 89 slaughtered pigs representing various pig farms in Bulacan, Pampanga and Tarlac provinces were tested for the presence of clenbuterol and salbutamol residues using one-step ELISA for either of these beta-agonists lean-enhancing agents. Fifty-four (54) of 89 samples were tested positive for residues of these compounds. The relatively high proportion (60.67%) of positive reactors reflected the fact that these compounds that have been shown to be hazardous to human health were being used in pigs raised for human consumption.
