Abstract:

The influence of the submandibular salivary gland on the accessory sex glands of the rat namely, the prostate and seminal vesicle was dctermined by examining the effect of total removal of the submandibular salivary gland (total submandibular sialoadenectomy) on these glands histologic features and secretion. Branching of the tunica mucosa of the seminal vesicle was lesser in the sialoadenectomized group compared with the intact and sham-operated group. On the other hand, no histological difference in the prostate gland was observed among intact, sham-operated and sialoadenectomized group. Total submandibular sialoadenectomy resulted in a significantly (P
