The Italian writer Italo Calvino proposes that the Greek legend about Perseus cutting off the head of Medusa with the use of a mirror can be viewed as an allegory of the relationship between the poet and his/her world. Like Perseus, a poet envisions the world indirectly and differently. Marjorie Evasco is an intellectual Perseus. Holding up the shiny shield, she designs a new dream and threads words together to create an intricate mat of verses.
