Abstract:

To understand the press in any society, some attempt must be made to find out what society expects of it. What, for instance, is the role of the press in the formation of public opinion? What is the degree of freedom that it should enjoy? What are the limitations to press freedom? Hence, only by looking into the basic assumptions which society holds can an adequate appraisal be made of press performance.
