Teachers are entrusted with the task of ensuring children’s intellectual growth and preparing each new generation to meet the challenge of the future. This qualitative study employed multiple-case analysis which focused on the lived experiences of teachers in the public school in the performance of their roles and functions in the school and in the community where they served. Five public school teachers were considered in this study. In-depth interview, collection of journals and personal observation were used to explore the stories of teachers. Results showed that the public school teachers were adept with the definitions of status and prestige and how these affected their outlook in life, considering their current status. It was pointed out that austerity was determined to be living in the prestige of teaching profession. With all the pressures, difficulties and challenges they encountered, still they stood firm, hoped for good news, developed the pupils holistically into a productive, useful and functional citizens of the country.
