The Filipino Teachers as Victims of Social Bashing: A Phenomenon of Emerging Language

Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the language used in social bashing, more specifically to identify the words or expressions used to bash teachers online. This study employed the phenomenological approach. In addition, this study also accounted the perlocutionary speech acts embedded in social bashing as well as the issues found in social bashing. The participants of this inquiry were the 10 secondary teachers selected purposively from both public and private schools of Davao del Norte and Tagum City. Triangulation was done through the detailed description of the methodology, well-recorded in-depth interview and focus group discussion, content analysis, inquiry audit, and member checking. After a thorough thematic analysis, three major themes were generated from the social bashing experiences of teachers such as social bashing targeting teacher’s personality, capability, gender and sexual preference. On the perculotionary acts, five major themes emerged namely negative effects on physical health, psychological health, social health; positive outcome and unaffected. For the issues embedded in social bashing, seven major themes were generated which were grade issues, unfair treatment of students, subject requirements, insulting/humiliating/undermining students, revenge, teacher incompetence and teacher was very strict and perfectionist.
