Leah S Bañez

Abstract:

This study aimed to explore the interplay of relationships between the religious instructor-volunteers teaching in the public schools and the recipients of the voluntary work and the organizations where they belong as the setting of this endeavor, their reasons of engaging in volunteerism, their rewards and challenges, their insights, drives, motives and goals. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach. The participants were 24 volunteers coming from the three different parachurch organizations. The data were analyzed to identify patterns and themes relating to the rewards and challenges of being religious instructor volunteers in public schools. Among the highlights were linked to passion for children, service to God, social accountability, personal growth and social connection. The rewards and challenges of the religious instructorvolunteers as they pursue their ministerial cause while giving service to school children also comprised this endeavor. The findings locate expansive potential on how this research could be a channel in addressing the shortage of religious instructor volunteers in the community, as well as promoting positive patriotic values needed for nation-building. The study concluded that engaging in a volunteer role may not only help the communities in the Philippines but also may contribute to ministerial cause, personal growth, and well-being of volunteers.
