Abstract:

Speaking proficiency is an important skill that helps one to be successful, and the development of speaking proficiency has been the focus of language classrooms. However, students’ level of proficiency has been noticeably varied even though they had similar learning experiences. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between personality, affective filters and speaking proficiency among 218 Grade 10 students in Davao City. The descriptive-correlational method of research was employed in the study. Tests on personality, motivation, anxiety and self-esteem were utilized to determine the personality and to assess the level of affective filters of the respondents. In addition, an adapted two-part interview was conducted to gauge their speaking proficiency. Results showed an almost equal number of extravert and introvert respondents. The affective filters of the respondents were found to be moderate and the overall English speaking proficiency was advanced. Furthermore, the results revealed that the relationship between personality and English speaking proficiency was negatively significant while the relationship between the affective filters and English speaking proficiency was significant. Lastly, the results indicated that personality and affective filters significantly influence English speaking proficiency.
