Oral English Apprehension and Speech Performance of Grade Eleven Students

Abstract:

The study aimed to help achieve one of the main goals of oral English communication, to improve the speaking proficiency of the learners. This quantitative study employed a descriptivecorrelation research design to determine the relationship between oral English apprehension and speech performance of 300 Grade 11 students in Lupon National Comprehensive High School, Lupon Vocational High School and Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc. The respondents answered a 20-item researcher-made questionnaire to measure the level of their oral English apprehension. A speech performance test was also used to determine the level of their speech performance. For the comprehensive interpretation and analysis of data, the mean, standard deviation, Pearson-r and linear regression were utilized. Results revealed that the level of oral English apprehension in terms of trait, context, audience and situation was moderate; while the level of speech performance in terms of fluency was low but moderate in terms of grammar, pronunciation and selfesteem. Moreover, it was also found out that oral English apprehension correlated to speech performance of the students. Furthermore, it was found out that oral English apprehension influenced students’ speech performance. Hence, the speech performance of respondents coming from the three secondary schools was affected by their level of oral English apprehension.
