This study was conducted to determine the relationship between personal attributes and reading competences of grade nine students. In this study, the factors that affected the acquisition of reading competence of learners were motivation to achieve, attitudes towards study, family involvement, and family income. On the other hand, vocabulary, comprehension, speed and fluency were the indicators of reading competence. Moreover, this study made use of descriptive analytical-correlational as its research design, and factor analysis as its statistical tool. Furthermore, this action research involved a total of 238 grade nine students enrolled in Bobon National High School (BNHS), Doña Rosa G. Rabat Memorial National High School (DRGRMNHS) and Lawigan National High School (LNHS) in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental. Based on the findings, it was purported that as to the students’ personal attributes, the levels of motivation to achieve, attitudes towards study and family involvement were all moderate, and the level of family income was below poverty line. Lastly, as to the reading skills of the students, the levels of students’ vocabulary and comprehension were all poor, while the levels of reading speed and fluency of the students were all moderate.
