MASTER OF ARTS IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION Cognitive Style and Student Achievement in English of Grade 6 Students

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between cognitive style and English achievement of Grade 6 students in Davao city. There has been a decline in the English proficiency of Filipinos and this is associated with the English achievement at the school level. This study utilized descriptive-correlation which analyzed a population and formulated conclusion based on analysis. It determined the extent of relationship between the variables tested from the same population. The research utilized the Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) and Asian Psychological Services and Assessment (APSA) results of the students as the research instruments. The statistical tools used in analyzing the data were mean, percentage, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Based on the results of the study, with regard to the cognitive style of grade 6 students in Davao City, majority were field dependent and the result of APSA English achievement test revealed that students were progressing towards standard. Result of Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test indicated that the cognitive style and English achievement had a significant inverse relationship. School officials and educators are given impression to develop and monitor the alignment of cognitive style to the teaching-learning process to better cater to the English achievement of students. Moreover, learning experiences and resources hinge on the way how students process information in the given field or environment.
