Work Motivation Factors in Relation to Teachers’ Performance of Secondary School Teachers in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan

Abstract:

Teachers are global development intermediaries. Any nation, like the Philippines, can create and foster learners through them who can guide the nation toward progress and development. Thus, enhancing teachers’ existence, relatedness, and growth needs to meet a highly effective performance should be prioritized for long-term and sustainable nation-building. Understanding teachers’ motivations and needs are essential for providing them with opportunities to succeed. The study determined the work motivation factors in relation to teacher performance in public and private secondary schools in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, Philippines, SY 2021-2022. The descriptive-correlational research design adopted Sola’s (2020) questionnaire to gather the needed data from the 40 teacher-respondents randomly selected from a set of criteria in two public and two private schools in town. The data were analyzed with the use of frequency counts, means, percentages, Pearson’s- r, Analysis of variance, and t-test. The female-dominated tenured public and private secondary teachers of Sanchez Mira, Cagayan Philippines, are in their mid-adulthood stage, have more than a decade in service, and have pursued their graduate studies. The ‘Outstanding’ public and the ‘Very Satisfactory private secondary school teachers have a ‘Very High level of Motivation on Existence, Relatedness, and Growth (ERG) needs. Generally, the higher the teachers’ work motivation level, the higher their teaching performance. Also, the higher the educational attainment of the teachers, the higher their level of work motivation. Moreover, public school teachers have higher work motivation than private school teachers. However, their teaching performance is comparable.
