Dance Workshop for the Preservice Elementary Teachers: Reinforcing Perceived Competence in Folk Dance

Discipline: Education
Abstract:
Philippine Folk Dance is known for showcasing the rich culture of the country. It is, then, anticipated to be enriched in schools.
However, preservice teachers who are general education majors experienced less exposure to these dances, especially during
the pandemic, which might affect their competence in this field. Thus, this qualitative action research aimed to reinforce their
perceived competence in folk dance by providing a dance workshop for them. The workshop lasted three days with lecturers
and trainers from inside and outside the campus. After the workshop, the 16 participants agreed to be part of the focus group
discussion and were divided into two groups. The data were thematically analyzed. Findings revealed that the preservice
teachers' folk dance knowledge, skills, perceptions, and teaching confidence strengthened after the activity. Therefore,
workshops and other similar activities should be continually offered to students.
