The Challenges of Teaching Physical and Health Education in the New Normal

Abstract:

Teaching Physical and Health Education in the era of COVID-19 has presented a dynamic set of hurdles. The shift from traditional face-to-face instruction to a purely online format has created barriers and limitations in achieving desired learning outcomes. This study aimed to explore the specific challenges faced by educators of this subject across college, senior high school, and junior high school levels within the 'new normal' educational landscape. Surveying 62 respondents, this research delved into personal, academic/school, and instructional challenges encountered during this transition. The analysis reveals a predominantly young, female, college-educated demographic with five years or less of teaching experience. Teaching Physical and Health Education in this context emerges as notably challenging, particularly in terms of personal motivation, academic adaptation, and instructional delivery. The findings highlight a significant obstacle: a loss of motivation among educators faced with these new circumstances. To address this, it is recommended that schools provide robust administrative support tailored to the needs of Physical and Health Education instructors. Additionally, further research should explore additional areas of concern for these educators, facilitating targeted strategies to navigate the complexities of this 'new normal.
