Abstract:

Aim. Primarily, this study explored and described the lived experience after discharge of CVA status/post (S/P) left hemiplegic patients. Method. The researchers employed the descriptive phenomenological psychological research method based on the work of Husserl and Merleau-Ponty and utilized Amadeo Giorgi’s five-step method of data analysis. Thirteen participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Results. Five (5) themes emerged: (1) costly endurance, (2) plethora of emotions, (3) family matters, (4) overcoming adversities, and (5) belief in the Supreme Being. The meaning of the experience that emerged bears resemblance to an iceberg model by M. Goodman, 2002. Beneath the resulting physical incapacity/disability due to the crisis encountered by the participants lie other problems and issues that are not immediately apparent. Conclusion. The participants’ experiences related to the stroke burden of illness brought not only the physical but also the psychosocial, financial, and spiritual challenges. The participants endure the issues through a support system network, effective coping mechanisms, positive handling of emotions, intimacy with God, and seeking Divine intercession
