Mobile Phones’ Utilization Among High School Students: A Phenomenology

Abstract:
Academic performance of students is influenced by their behavioral patterns and other student-related
aspects, such as their participation in a range of extracurricular activities, specifically using their
mobile phones. Students' use of mobile phones increased as a result of the pandemic-related
shutdown of educational facilities. This research article explores the impact of mobile devices on
students' academic performance, particularly in light of the emerging norms in education. Academic
performance in this study refers to a student's overall success in school as well as the marks that the
student receives. Additionally, a qualitative research methodology and phenomenological study
design were employed where the major participants were picked by purposive sampling technique.
The primary participants in the study were interviewed face-to-face in a semi-structured manner.
Data were displayed and examined. According to research, there are three main reasons or causes for
why students utilize mobile devices, including boredom, stress reduction, and social connection.
Mobile devices can either support students' academic motivation or damage it. Given the limited
research on the subject, this study adds a lot of knowledge to what is already known. This will
encourage educational organizations and other professionals to take action to ensure that students'
use of mobile phones and other personal devices outside of class does not negatively impact their
academic achievement.
