Abstract:

With a country as conservative as the Philippines, Filipino sexual education is poorly implemented among educational institutions, especially sexual education catered to queer youth in the country. This resulted in a significant number of homosexual Filipino youth being uneducated about sexual situations, which may make them more vulnerable to dangerous outcomes. With this, the proponents curated an online comic series, entitled “Swipe Right,” named in reference to the act of “swiping” in order to view profiles among online dating applications. This comic series is designed to shed light on the lack of sexual education among homosexual Filipino youth. More so, it informs readers about often-considered taboo topics such as safe sex, sexual and gender identities, societal expectations, online dating, and other related subjects. A descriptive-interpretive case study research design was adapted along with purposive sampling techniques to identify the appropriate informants of the study. Several phases were considered by the proponents to ensure the quality of conceptualization, techniques, and methods in creating the comic series. The comic series comprises five episodes and was shared on some social media sites. Hence, it is recommended that the initial comic series be further rolled out to reach a wider range of readers, both locally and internationally.
