Perspectives and Challenges in Creative Writing Program and Pedagogy among Senior High School Teachers

Noeme Grace T. Farjani

Abstract:

This study explores perspectives and challenges of teachers with regard to Creative Writing (CW) program and pedagogy in order to address issues in the field. Purposive sampling was conducted with 30 Creative Writing teacher-respondents from both public and private Senior High Schools (SHS). Using researcher-made survey questionnaire and in-depth interview, the study revealed that majority of the teachers has not undergone training in teaching CW. While the teachers generally have high self-rating on the CW program and pedagogy, they are still faced with challenges in teaching Creative Writing and are in need of further training. Using Flow Theory, a design for the training of CW teachers is theorized. Prevalent themes are inferred: positioning teachers-as-readers-writers, providing relevant textual tools, and employing strategies in teaching CW. It is recommended that training be materialized and further studies on the CW curriculum be conducted.
