EFFECTIVENESS OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING STRATEGY IN IMPROVING THE READING COMPREHENSION AMONG GRADE 7 STUDENTS

Pamela N Cañete

Abstract:

This study sought to identify the effectiveness of using project-based learning strategy to improve the reading comprehension of Grade 7 students of a private secondary school during school year 2018-2019. Quasi-experimental design was used to prove the effectiveness of a strategy which aimed to improve the reading comprehension of the students. Participants were selected purposively with two heterogeneous sections of Grade 7 as the experimental group and the control group. The pre-test and post-test were conducted through an adopted reading comprehension test. Findings revealed that most respondents from both groups belong to “literal” level during the pre-test in the components namely: identifying main idea, identifying supporting facts and details, and making inferences and drawing conclusions. After exposing the experimental group to project-based learning strategy, their post-test results indicated that their reading comprehension levels had improved from “literal” to “applied” level in the area - identifying main idea. In the areas identifying supporting facts and details, their levels had improved from “literal” to “interpretive”. With the findings of the study, it can be concluded that an instructional strategy designed for a specific purpose of developing specific skill would be helpful in developing and enhancing the skills of the students.
