Abstract:

Exclusive breastfeeding for at least six months is considered the most effective way to ensure child health and survival. However, discontinuing exclusive breastfeeding among mothers has been a concerning issue in the global context. With the data on discontinuing exclusive breastfeeding from the Rural Health Unit, Diffun, this study aimed at eliciting the deterrent factors affecting exclusive breastfeeding among 10 postpartum mothers in Brgy. Rizal, Diffun, Quirino, through total enumeration technique. Results report that the respondents "disagree" with almost all the statements on the deterrent factors. However, there is a perceived low milk production among the respondents as yielded by the response to the statement 'Perception of inadequate milk supply' at mean=3. Following this finding, using the exploratory sequential design of mixed methods research, the study elicited the respondents' perception of Inadequate Milk Supply as a deterrent factor to exclusive breastfeeding. Among the perceived reasons relative to this are "due to perceived low milk production", "inverted nipples'', and "due to discomfort being first-time mother". These findings then suggest the conduct of further study employing a bigger sample size and locale, and deeper investigation on the issue of discontinuing exclusive breastfeeding. Finally, this study can be used as one of the bases for crafting projects like putting up milk bank facilities to address the issue of discontinuing exclusive breastfeeding.
