Sex Tourism: A Phenomenological Study on Overseas Filipino Workers

Discipline: Sociology

Abstract:

This study explores the experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) engaged in sex tourism abroad, emphasizing their personal narratives, learned sexual behaviors, and the significant effects of their work. Additionally, it examines the motivations behind their participation in sex tourism. Using a phenomenological-qualitative approach, the study employed content and narrative analysis to examine data obtained from eight LGBTQIA+ individuals through in-depth, unstructured interviews. Findings indicate that financial incentives serve as the primary motivation, with earnings ranging from ?20,000 ($400) per day to ?500,000–?750,000 ($10,000–$15,000) per month. However, participants reported experiencing anxiety and distress when confronted with unfamiliar situations and the potential for client violence. Despite long-term involvement in sex work, no significant health effects or changes in sexual behavior were observed. Furthermore, most participants did not have personal acquaintance with their clients. The study also highlights that sex work extends beyond physical encounters, encompassing cybersex and other forms of nudity and virtual sexual activity.
