Sports Motivation, Engagement and Sportsmanship Among Student–Athletes: Basis For An Enhanced Sports Development Program

Abstract:
This aimed to described the profile of the respondents – students in terms of sex, year level, trainings attended, roles and number of years in sports involvement; determined the respondents’ sports motivation as to intrinsic, extreinsic and amotivation; assessed the respondents’ sports engagement in terms of maternal support for sport, paternal support for sport, coach – athlete relationship, peer – support at sport, control and relevance for sports, and future aspirations and goals; evaluated the respondents’ sportsmanship in terms of participation, enjoyment, fair play, respect, and commitment; tested significant relationship among the variables; tested the relationship between and among sports motivation, engagement, and sportsmanship; and proposed an enhanced sports development program for Higher Educational Institutions. This descriptive method study investigated the sports motivation, sports engagement, and sportsmanship among the athletes, which aimed to provide the basis for a proposed enhanced sports development program for Higher Educational Institutions.
