Abstract:

This study employs a descriptive research methodology to examine the relationship between counsellor quality and student growth in China. It concentrates on three core variables: participant background, counsellor quality, and student growth, exploring these within a theoretical framework and relevant literature, with a specific focus on university counsellors. The sample consists of 385 university students from two normal universities in Guizhou Province, China, who were randomly selected to ensure a representative sample, considering factors such as sex, grade level, and major. The students overwhelmingly agreed that the counsellors performed well. Notably, significant differences emerged when the participants were segmented by grade, particularly in relation to career development, lifelong learning, counsellor values and ethical standards, and attitudes toward education. The correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship. The students held their counsellors in high regard regarding values and ethics, practical skills, professional growth, and commitment to lifelong learning. These results offer counsellors valuable guidance to foster an environment that promotes students’ confident and emotionally healthy development. The marked variations observed highlight the necessity of acknowledging and catering to the varying expectations and preferences of students across grade levels. It is advisable that counsellor training programs be structured to enhance counsellor excellence and foster student advancement. This research is crucial for enhancing the counsellor quality concerning ethics and values, professional proficiency, and life-long learning, thereby boosting the development of university students.
