Discipline: Education

Abstract:

As education continues to evolve in response to the demands of the 21st century, there is an increasing need to reimagine traditional teaching approaches across all disciplines, including physical education. While physical education has long been associated with physical skill development and performance-based assessment. It also offers a rich space for innovation, creativity, and holistic learning. This study aims to explore the design thinking mindset among physical education teachers, focusing on how they perceive, understand, and potentially apply design thinking principles in their pedagogical practices. This study attempts to reimagine the landscape of physical education by exploring the presence and depth of the design thinking mindset among physical education teachers from private basic schools in one of the regions of the Philippines. Utilizing an explanatory sequential research design, the study surveyed 42 physical education teachers from private senior high schools from Region IV-A, Philippines. Analysis reveals that the majority of the respondents strongly agree that they are practicing the identified indicators of design thinking in teaching. To substantiate, a focused group discussion was carried out and revealed the themes of growth in empathy and responsiveness, iterative lesson development, and creative confidence and collaboration related to the design thinking mindset of the respondents. A capability training program was developed and proposed for implementation.
