Teachers’ Functional Competencies: Basis For Competency Training Plan

Kristine R. Molina

Discipline: Teacher Training

Abstract:

Teacher competency is key in delivering quality education and improving student performance, especially in today’s tech-driven and learner-centered educational landscape. This study assessed the functional competencies of public secondary school teachers in Bagabag and Diadi, Nueva Vizcaya, focusing on four areas: subject matter expertise, instructional materials development, instructional delivery, and student evaluation. It also examined whether competency levels vary based on teachers’ demographic factors such as experience, rank, and educational attainment. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing an adapted assessment tool developed by Liwanag et al. (2023). Data were collected through a 4-point Likert scale survey and analyzed using ANOVA and t-tests. Results showed that teachers generally rated themselves as highly competent, with significant differences primarily found in their participation in professional development. These findings support the creation of a targeted Competency Training Plan to enhance teaching practices and promote continuous professional development.
