Retirement By Choice: A Phenomenological Investigation On The Impact Of Early Retirement On Police Officers' Well-Being

Richard G. Ramos | Madeilyn B Estacio

Discipline: social sciences (non-specific)

Abstract:

This phenomenological study explores the impact of early retirement on the well-being of police officers who retired by choice. Police work is a high-stress profession that demands physical endurance, emotional resilience, and psychological stability. While retirement is often viewed as a period of rest and transition, early retirement presents unique challenges and opportunities. Through in-depth interviews with retired police officers, this study examines their lived experiences, focusing on the reasons for their early retirement, their transition experiences, and their reflections on their sense of identity, purpose, and meaning in life following their decision to retire from active duty. Findings reveal that early retirement decisions are influenced by several factors that define their transition experience and sense of identity after retirement. Early retirement has both positive and negative outcomes, including increased family time, personal fulfillment, financial adjustments, and shifts in identity. Ultimately, the research highlights the importance of structured retirement planning and post-retirement programs in enhancing the comprehensive well-being of retired law enforcement officers.
