Discipline: Teacher Training

Abstract:

This paper details the proposed establishment of a Bachelor of Arts in Communication program at City College of Calamba, Philippines, addressing the growing demand for skilled communication professionals. The rationale underscores the program's robust curriculum, seamlessly integrating foundational communication theories with hands-on practical training in diverse areas such as media production, digital storytelling, public relations, and journalism. Offering specialized tracks, the program aims to cater to varied student interests and future career aspirations. Students will benefit from the guidance of experienced faculty members and valuable internship opportunities designed to bridge academic learning with real-world application. The proposed four-year degree structure, encompassing eight semesters and a total of 149 units including a dedicated internship component, will be administered by the Department of Arts and Sciences. The program envisions itself as a leading global institution, committed to cultivating innovative, ethical, and highly skilled communicators who can thrive in dynamic media landscapes. A comprehensive needs assessment survey conducted among senior high school students in Calamba and neighboring provinces reveals a significant level of interest in the program, particularly highlighting the appeal of free tuition. Based on this expressed interest and anticipated program growth, enrollment projections indicate a steady increase from an initial cohort of 35 students in the academic year 2025-2026 to a projected 65 students by 2028-2029, signifying a promising start for the new program.
