Leadership Style, Behavior, and Error Management Climate in Chinese Private Universities: Basis for Supervisory Plan

Liu Yanlin

Discipline: management studies

Abstract:

This study aimed to explore the relationships between leadership styles, behaviors, and error management climate in private undergraduate colleges in China. It proposes a supervisory program to enhance these elements. Using descriptive research methods, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to teachers at private universities. Statistical analyses, including weighted mean, regression analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), were employed to interpret the data. The findings reveal a predominantly female and young teaching workforce, with most teachers having less than ten years of service and holding a master's degree. The perceived leadership styles were primarily transactional and differential, with transformational leadership being less common and instances of abusive leadership present. Transformational and transactional leadership positively impact learning behaviors and performance, while abusive leadership negatively affected job satisfaction and performance. The study also highlighted significant differences in leadership style and error management climate based on service length and educational attainment. The results indicate a positive correlation between transformational leadership and error management climate, and a negative correlation with abusive leadership. Recommendations include optimizing the faculty structure, enhancing leadership styles, promoting learning and performance behaviors, strengthening error management practices, addressing diverse needs of teachers, and implementing a comprehensive supervisory plan to foster a positive organizational climate.
