Abstract:
The persistent challenges in mathematics education, particularly in foundational skills like integer operations, highlight a critical need for innovative and engaging instructional approaches. PARIMATH (Parent-Assisted Interactive Mathematics Module) is an innovative educational tool designed to address this issue by enhancing numeracy skills through collaborative parental involvement. This classroom-based action study explores the perceptions of PARIMATH in improving students' understanding of integer operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—by providing interactive activities where parents can actively support and guide their children's learning process at home. The module incorporates games, interactive exercises, and home-based activities to reinforce their learning. This study employed thematic analysis to investigate the benefits and challenges experienced by the learners and parents. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and reflections from the learners and parents who participated. Thematic analysis revealed key themes related to the benefits and challenges of the PARIMATH module. On the positive side, learner-participants highlighted a mastery of the rules for solving integers, reinforced learning with parents' help, and found the learning tools easy to use. Parents observed improvement in their children's skills and expressed newfound confidence in their ability to be involved in their child's education. However, the study also identified notable challenges. Learners found it difficult to solve problems with larger numbers and required assistance from others. Parents faced a challenge in understanding some concepts related to solving integers, which hindered them from assisting effectively. The study concludes that while the PARIMATH module presents numerous benefits, addressing the identified challenges through additional resources or support could further enhance the module's utility. The findings provide valuable insights into the role of parental involvement in enhancing their children's numeracy skills. This study offers a promising model for bridging the gap between home and school learning, promoting a more supportive and engaging environment for mastering numeracy skills.
