Abstract:

ANDRES CRISTOBAL CRUZ - THE MAN

A literary work is the product of its time or a reaction against it. A writer is molded by the age in which he lives and the milieu in which he writes. In an environment which is oppressive, where basic freedoms are curtailed or where the conditions of the times deprive the writer of the chance to prove himself, he takes either of two alternatives: he withdraws from the world of the real and returns to the past, creating his own utopia, or he presents a graphic picture of his age that is also a protest against the ills of society. Sometimes, a writer combines both.
