Learning Patch Tool (LPT) and Students’ Basic Grammar Skills in English

Abstract:

The rapid changes in the educational landscapes of the Philippines have outpaced both students and teachers, making it challenging for them to keep their stride. One greatly affected macro skills is the students’ Basic Grammar Skills in English. This study developed and validated the Learning Patch Tool (LPT) as supplemental instructional material to enhance students' basic grammar skills in English in areas like parts of speech, parts of the sentence, sentence structure, and subject-verb agreement. It was conducted for Grade 10 students at Zeneben Integrated School, Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat. The researcher used a true-experimental research design to assess the quality of the innovative strategy in teaching students. Descriptive-evaluative research design was also used to determine the extent of students’ assessment of the LPT. The findings indicate that the evaluation of the LPT received a "very good" rating, meeting the expected standards set by the evaluators. Results further demonstrated that the use of the module effectively enhanced students' basic grammar skills in English, leading to a significant improvement in the post-test scores of the experimental group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed LPT has the potential to strengthen students' foundational grammar skills through structured intervention materials tailored to address the least mastered skills identified each quarter. Through these printed materials and differentiated grammar activities, teachers can modify, strengthen, and projectile essential learning to boost students’ academic performance in English.
