Abstract:

The research aimed to identify the code-switching attitudes and practices among School of Education students in Un53iversidad de Zamboanga. It probed respondents' language use and proficiency in frequency, situational proficiency, and ease; their attitudes towards code-switching based on general perceptions, situational use, and ethnicity; the level of code-switching in scholastic, social, and situational life; their views about code-switching in others; and whether there exist significant correlations between demographic variables, language proficiency, attitudes towards code-switching, and behaviors. A quantitative-descriptive research design was employed, and purposive sampling was conducted on currently enrolled Education students who were subjected to multilingual settings. Data were collected through a standardized and reliable questionnaire and were analyzed based on statistical analysis. Results indicated that the respondents always utilize their first language in everyday life, marking it as their primary mode of communication. They tend to have positive attitudes toward code-switching, considering it as natural and beneficial. Code-switching behavior differed across contexts and no substantial association existed between demographic characteristics and code-switching behavior.
