Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between emotional
intelligence and leadership capability among Licensed Professional Teachers
serving as training personnel at the Philippine National Police Training
Institute (PNPTI). Using a descriptive-correlational design and near-census
approach, the study involved 200 teachers assigned as Police Non-
Commissioned Officers (PNCOs) and Non-Uniformed Personnel (NUP)
across PNPTI training centers nationwide. Data were gathered through a
modified survey questionnaire based on the Schutte Emotional Intelligence
Scale and established leadership capability measures using Likert-type
scales. Reliability testing showed very high internal consistency across
constructs (McDonald’s w = .96–.99; Cronbach’s a = .96–.99). Since the data
were non-normally distributed, nonparametric statistical tests were used.
Findings revealed very high levels of emotional intelligence and leadership
capability among respondents. Emotional intelligence had a moderately
strong positive relationship with leadership capability (p = .62). Educational
attainment was moderately associated with emotional intelligence (p = .61)
and weakly associated with leadership capability (p = .15). Years of service
was strongly related to leadership capability (p = .72, p < .001) but not
significantly related to emotional intelligence (p = .098, p = .17). Overall,
emotional intelligence was positively associated with leadership capability,
while experience contributed to leadership differences.
