Competency Assessment of TVL of Senior High School Students: Aligning Skills with Industry Requirements

Abstract:

Competency development and industry alignment are important in preparing Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Cookery students for higher education and employment. However, there is a need to examine whether students’ competencies match actual workplace expectations. This study assessed the basic, common, and core competencies of TVL Cookery Senior High School students and examined their alignment with industry needs. A mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data were gathered through student self-assessments and industry supervisors' evaluations based on TESDA standards, while qualitative data were collected from industry managers and supervisors through key informant interviews. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. Results showed that students rated themselves highly on basic, common, and core competencies, while industry supervisors rated them very highly across the same areas. Significant differences were found between students' self-assessments and industry evaluations across all competency domains, indicating that industry supervisors viewed students’ workplace competencies more favorably than students did. Qualitative findings showed that workplace readiness requires both technical and soft skills, particularly food preparation, sanitation, time management, communication, teamwork, adaptability, and a willingness to continue learning. Industry partners also emphasized the value of competitions, TESDA certifications, and hands-on training in strengthening student competence. The findings suggest that TESDA-aligned instruction and structured industry exposure help prepare TVL Cookery students for workplace demands. The study recommends stronger reflective activities, ongoing skills training, and closer collaboration between schools and industry to support students’ confidence, competence, and professional growt
