Rotacio Gravoso

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

Data for this qualitative study were gathered from 38 Filipino university teachers who were asked for their opinions about educational technology and benefits derived from using technology in their classes. Their answers were analyzed using the phenomenographic technique. Results showed that the teachers' views were aligned with the traditional transmissive view of technology. Considering the results of numerous studies showing that technologies' potentials can only be harnessed to the fullest extent if these are used as tools for knowledge construction in a learner-centered learning environment, findings of the present study suggest the need to design interventions to change teachers’ conceptions and ensure appropriate use of these innovations. One is to implement staff development programs and the other, to institute reforms in the educational technology and teacher-training programs. The study also identifies areas where research on teachers' conceptions of technology should focus.
