Lea Salterio Landicho

Abstract:

This study sought to determine the perceived compliance level of nurses in infection control practices and its relationship to administrative support. These infection control practices include hand washing, donning of gloves and wearing of masks. The level of administrative support can be identified through physical set-up, supplies and equipment, manpower and policy.

To assess the compliance level of nurses, a simulation instrument was administered to 67 nurses from Saint Anne General Hospital and Lucena Medical Mission Group General Hospital. Another instrument was also given to determine the level of administrative support on infection control practices. Data were analyzed using weighted means and chi-square test of independence using SPSS 16.0. All significance levels were set at 0.05.

Data revealed that the nurses have a generally high compliance level for all infection control practices: 82.1% for hand washing, 89.6% for donning of gloves and 88.1% for wearing of masks. The administration of the hospital is compliant in the guidelines of infection control in terms of physical set-up of the hospital. Facilities that would facilitate the practice of infection control are provided. There is effective compliance of administration on standardized guidelines and protocols on infection control.

There is a significant relationship between the compliance level of nurses in the infection control practice of hand washing and administrative support in terms of physical set-up and manpower. Whereas, in terms of supplies and equipment and policies conveys no significant relationship. The compliance level of nurses in the infection control practice of donning of gloves and wearing of masks and administrative support to infection control practices in terms of physical set-up, supplies and equipments, manpower and policies shows no significant relationship.

Recommendations were made for an improved infection control program.
