Abstract:

lWThe article examines the gender dimensions of migration and how these impact on the situation of migrant women workers. While there are enough international legal instruments that theoretically provide protection for all migrant workers there are specific cultural, economic and social factors that impinge on the ability of women to access these legal protections in the receiving countries. In many cases, women migrant workers are especially vulnerable to physical, social and cultural discrimination and exploitation that are imbedded in the very occupations that are open to them.

Various national, bilateral and international approaches by governments and non-government organizations have been employed by states and international organization in support of the protection regimes for women migrant workers. Despite some degree of success mainly coming from innovative approaches through government and civil society collaboration, there are continuing challenges to the protection of women migrant workers.
