Abstract:
This research study attempted to develop and evaluate an Instructional Materials in English 5 Infused with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Skill-Building Activities for the Grade 5 Pupils of St. Scholastica’s Academy of Marikina (SSAM), Marikina Heights, Marikina City during the school year 2023-2024. The study gathered data from the English 5 test results of the Grade 5 pupils in the Asian Psychological Services and Assessment Standards-Based Assessment (APSA-SBA) for two consecutive school years (2021-2022, 2022-2023) using frequency and ranking to identify the top ten least mastered competencies in English 5 that could be developed as instructional materials. Moreover, this research also collected data from 187 Grade 5 pupils enrolled during the school year 2023-2024 at SSAM. The Social and Emotional Competence Questionnaire (SECQ) by Ee and Zhou (2012) was adopted to determine the level of social and emotional learning competence of the Grade 5 pupils in terms of the
5 SEL domains – self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. The data was analyzed using weighted mean which revealed that the level of social and emotional learning competence of the Grade 5 pupils was at a moderate proficiency with a grand weighted mean of 2.98, which was interpreted as High. This was also used to analyze the evaluation of the two groups of respondents – the English Teachers and the Expert Evaluators in the field of guidance counseling and psychology, on the developed instructional materials in terms of the following parts of the materials: engage, expound, enhance, expose, and equate, through a survey questionnaire. The respondents' evaluations revealed that the developed instructional materials in English 5 based on the given criteria garnered an overall weighted mean of 4.90 and 4.82, respectively, which are both interpreted as Highly Acceptable. Based on these findings, the study recommends infusing SEL skill- building activities into English instruction to enhance pupils’ social and emotional learning competence.
